Bye-Bye SQUAD 13
Friday, June 19, 2009
-
On Saturday, June 13, 2009, the Lafayette Fire Company in Pennsylvania received delivery of SQUAD 13. Chief Kiser and several members from RBVFC delivered the Squad as the final step in the sale of the unit. The unit was sold for $275k.  Proceeds from the sale of the unit will be used towards the purchase of a new pumper.

As sad as we were to see it go, the excitement of the members of  Lafayette at the arrival of the unit was pleasing.

Dwelling Fire in the Landing
Friday, May 15, 2009
-
At approximately 0300 hrs. E132 was dispatched for a reported dwelling fire in the 1200 block of Annis Squam Harbor in the 1304 box. AC13 was also added. Upon arrival, AC 13 reported he had light smoke showing w/a reported basement fire.  After completing a walk around, he reported he had heavy smoke from side C, reported to have an all clear and instructed E132 to lay in from Elizabeth Landing Way. E132 5w0, layed in and as they pulled away the supply line hung up in the hose bed, dragging the hydrant valve, rendering it inoperable.  Upon arrival Battalion 2 assumed command and field and made AC13 Fire Attack w/E132's crew.  To supply E132, QNT 30 had to lay from the hydrant to 132 and Engine 101 covered the hydrant.  Upon Entry, the crew from 13 confirmed a working basement fire.  The fire was extinguished shortly thereafter and crews made entry to the adjacent dwellings checking for extension with negetive results.

A good job by all to overcome a supply issue helped to prevent this fire from spreading.  Pics available soon.

EVERYBODY Goes Home
Wednesday, April 22, 2009
-
On Tuesday evening Engine 131 was involved in a horrible accident while responding to a call, on Ft. Smallwood Rd in front of Laurer's supermarket.  As a result of the accident, the officer was trapped and had to be extricated by Squad 11.  The 3 firefighters in the back were all transported to local hospitals while the Driver and Officer were transported to Shock Trauma.  Thankfully, all firefighters were treated and released and are home resting with thier families.

Throughout the night, we received a lot of support from the Fire Department family. We would like send thanks to the crew of Squad 11 for thier wonderful efforts in the extrication of the Lieutenant, and to the volunteers of the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company for transferring in to cover for us while we took care of our own. A special thankyou to the community for thier support in the aftermath of this crash, and to everyone that has called to offer support and help in any that they could. We GREATLY appreciate it.

We would like to convey to everyone, that SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES! That was very evident in last nights crash. So please take the time to click that belt because you never know when you are going to need it!

EVERYBODY GOES HOME!

At approximately 8:30p, Quint 13 was alerted for a possible dwelling on Dennis Rd. in 12's first due.  While Quint 13 (5w1), Chief 13, and Assistant Chief 13 were responding, units were informed that the fire the caller was seeing was the fire that Engine was already operating on on Boulden Ct. and were redirected as the second alarm to that incident. Upon arrival AC 13 was made logistics and he and CH13 assisted command at the command post. E132 (4w0) was on the initial alarm as they were returning from a transfer to cover for a fire earlier in the day in 6's area, and SQ13 was added to the 2nd alarm assignment (4w0).  The fire was fueled by two propane tanks and there was extensive damage to the dwelling and two vehicles.  Pictures will posted once they have become available.

Qiunt 30 arrived on location to find a 2 story vacant dwelling 100% invovled, and immediately set up for ladder pipe operations.  Upon arrival, QT 13 laid 700 ft. of 5 ", and prepared for ladder pipe ops, followed by use of a handline to complete mop up operations.

Double Pullin Box 10-17
At around 2220 hours Monday night, Fire Alarm dispatched E101, cold, for a building fire in the 10-17 box at the White Rocks Marina. While in route fire alarm received additional information and upgraded the response to hot and completed the box.  E101 arrived on location with heavy fire from side Alpha.  E131 (4w1) was dispatched as second due and E132 (7w0) requested to be added.  E131 laid 300 ft. of 5in. and established a draft to supply the fire ground efforts. C13, officer from E131, assumed command and directed the crew of E131 to assist E101 with fire attack. At this time command received reports of people trapped in the basement. C13 directed the fire attack crews to force open the basement doors and complete a primary search and directed E132’s crew to assume fire attack. The primary search of the basement was negetive.  At this point BC2 (who had assumed command) arrived on scene and received  reports of possible people trapped on the first floor, and directed C13 and Lt. 30 to perform a search of the top floor also with negetive results. Due to the fire extending into the first and second floors and a partial collapse of side alpha ¸ BC2 sounded the evacuation tones and ordered all crews out of  the building and switched to defensive ops.  The crew from E132 pulled a 2 ½ " attack line to the Bravo side to knock down the rest of the fire. Units cleared at approximately 0130 hours. Great job to all crews on the fire ground!

Riviera Beach receives AFG grant for Portables and Pagers
Thursday, March 12, 2009
-
The Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company  announced at a public check presenting ceremony, held on Monday at the station, that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has approved its Assistance to Firefighters Grant request in the amount of $49,704.  This award will be used toward the purchase of 42 new voice alert pagers and 10 new portable radio units for the station’s fire apparatus.

The alert pagers will allow virtually every active member of the Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company to be alerted, at their residence, place of work, or anywhere within range, when there is a need to fill the station.  The Company’s leadership hopes that this capability will greatly improve response statistics and the Anne Arundel County Fire Department’s ability to provide a personnel surge when there is heightened emergency activity throughout the County’s response area.

The new portable radios will provide a much needed benefit to the safety of the community’s first responders.  Unfortunately, because of the high cost of portable radio units, there are many instances when a firefighter must enter a structure without their own radio.  If for some reason the firefighter is separated from his or her crew, they could be placed in a dangerous situation with limited means of communication.  The 10 new radios, provided by the Department of Homeland Security Grant, which is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), are a great stride toward eliminating that problem for Station 13’s personnel.

The Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company has been serving the communities of northern Anne Arundel County with quality Emergency Medical Services, Heavy Rescue, Marine, and Fire Protection since 1930.  The Fire Officers and Board of Directors look forward to working very closely with the County Fire Department, County Executive Leopold, and other elected officials, including Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger and Senator Barbara Mikulski, in order to secure future funding that will prove to be a vital asset to the safety of first responders and the community at large.

A special thank you to Captains James Evans and Jay Shipley for the time they took to write this grant and make this event possible!
